We would like to take this opportunity to share important information regarding the recent guidelines set forth by the Medical Board of Australia. These guidelines, established in 2023, emphasise the significance of screening for Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) using a validated assessment tool before conducting any cosmetic surgery or non-surgical procedures.

To ensure the utmost care and well-being of our patients, we will be implementing a Cosmetic Readiness Questionnaire from July 01^st as a screening measure at our clinic. This questionnaire is a validated screening tool designed specifically for cosmetic settings, allowing our experienced practitioners to ensure we are giving the best care to you, as well as flagging whether our treatments are a suitable option for you at this time.

The Cosmetic Readiness Questionnaire consists of seven items that evaluate the core dimensions of Body Image, including preoccupation with physical appearance flaws, appearance-related distress, and interference with social, occupational, or role functioning. It is important to note that the Questionnaire is used as a screening tool and does not provide an official diagnosis of BDD. An official diagnosis should be made by a qualified mental health professional.

Extensive research supports the need for screening for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) prior to cosmetic procedures. Individuals diagnosed with Body Dysmorphic Disorder who undergo such procedures often experience no improvement or even a worsening of their mental health condition, with many expressing dissatisfactions with the outcomes. Moreover, individuals with BDD face a threefold higher risk of experiencing complications and significant post-operative pain compared to those without BDD.

The Cosmetic Readiness Questionnaire has been validated and deemed suitable for screening purposes by Lekakis et al. (2016). Considering the prevalence of individuals screening positive for BDD in populations seeking cosmetic procedures, it is important to adopt a comprehensive decision-making process.
