How Vitamin C helps your immune system fight off viruses

Vitamin C is an incredibly versatile nutrient. It plays an important role in a wide range of benefits throughout your body, from helping to heal cuts and bruises to rejuvenating hair and nail health, to supporting your adrenals when you’re under stress. Vitamin C is best known, however, as an immunity superstar. After all, there’s a reason why it’s referred to as “the immunity vitamin”.

The scientific name for pure Vitamin C is Ascorbic Acid which has been shown to support a vast number of immune mechanisms in our body. Let’s use white blood cells as an example to see How Vitamin C directly supports our immune system. White blood cells are an important part of our immune system. Our bodies have several different types of white blood cells, each of which helps to fight off viruses and bad bacteria in a different way. Vitamin C assists with stimulating the production and the function of many of these types of white blood cells. It also helps your body to produce important antibodies as well as powerful antioxidant properties that help protect certain white blood cells from the toxic compounds they produce in their fight against pathogens.

Another example of how Vitamin C helps our immune system function is through our adrenal glands which play a key role in your body’s response to stress. Our adrenal glands make a considerable amount of Vitamin C each time a stress response is triggered. This may be part of why we are more likely to get a cold when we’re stressed. Additionally, Vitamin C also plays a considerable part in how our skin and mucous membranes function healthily. This is our body’s first line of defence against viruses. A cut or graze to the skin can become a ‘doorway’ for infection-causing bacteria. Vitamin C assists our body to produce collagen which is a key protein in skin, that is integral for wound healing.

Vitamin C infusions at My Botique is performed via IV and contains a high dose of Vitamin C, coupled with antioxidants and electrolytes. The benefits of having Vitamin C intravenously means the vitamin can go straight into the bloodstream. Because it skips the stomach and intestines, vitamin C in the blood rises to very high levels and very quickly. Supplements on the other hand can not deliver Vitamin C levels nearly as high as IV and can be dangerous if taken in large doses. Despite label claims, no supplement is equal to IV Vitamin C, no matter how much you take or what formula you use.
